Sujith, Pankaj Wahi † ‡ Department of Aerospace Engineering Indian Institute of Technology Madras Chennai 600036, India [email protected], [email protected] Department of Mechanical Engineering Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur Kanpur-208016, India [email protected] ABSTRACT Spontaneous pressure and heat release rate oscillations can get excited in a confined combustion system (for example, gas turbines and furnaces) due to coupling between the acoustic modes of the system and unsteady heat release rate from the source of combustion. These self-excited oscillations result in high noise levels, increased emission of NOx gases and reduced life span of the combustion system. In extreme cases, the emergence of such oscillations can lead to complete system failure. Hence, there is a huge impetus for investigations on thermoacoustic instability in practical combustion systems.

Bifurcation Analysis of Self-excited Thermoacoustic Oscillations in Damper-equipped Combustion Chambers

This paper presents the stability and bifurcation analysis of a nonlinear thermoacoustic model consisting of a combustion chamber coupled to a Helmholtz damper. Only the acoustic mode in the cavity of the combustion chamber to which the Helmholtz damper is tuned is considered. The Helmholtz damper includes a non-smooth damping term and can be seen as a tuned vibration absorber with a coupling o...

The Response of Two-Degree of Freedom Self-Sustained Systems with Quadratic Nonlinearities to a Parametric Excitation (RESEARCH NOTE)

In this study the interaction between self-excited and paramet rically excited oscillations in two-degree-of-freedom systems with quadratic nonlinearities is investigated. The fundamental parametric resonance of the first mode and 3:1 internal resonance is considered, followed by 1:2 internal and parametric resonances of the second mode. The method of multiple time scales is applied to derive f...

Nonlinear Self-excited Thermoacoustic Oscillations of a Ducted Premixed Flame: Bifurcations and Routes to Chaos

We study the bifurcations of a ducted two-dimensional premixed flame using numerical simulations of the coupled dynamical system. When the flame position in the duct is changed the system undergoes transition to period-1, quasi-periodic, period-2, frequencylocked and chaotic oscillations via different bifurcations. For certain parameter ranges multiple stable solutions exist and the ultimate st...

Nonlinear Themoacoustic In/Stability of a Rijke Tube with a Distributed Heat Source

In this paper, thermoacoustic dynamic behaviour patterns of a Rijke tube with a distributed heat source have been investigated. The heat release model consists of a row of distributed heat sources with individual heat release rates. The integrated heat release rate is then coupled with the acoustic perturbation for thermoacoustic analysis. Unlike the conventional approach utilizing the Galerkin...

Thermoacoustic Instabilities in the Rijke Tube: Experiments and Modeling

Thermoacoustic instability can appear in thermal devices when unsteady heat release is coupled with pressure perturbations. This effect results in excitation of eigen acoustic modes of the system. These instabilities are important in various technical applications, for instance, in rocket motors and thermoacoustic engines. A Rijke tube, representing a resonator with a mean flow and a concentrat...
